Complaining about this book, that it is not Smyth's legendary Greek Grammar from Harvard University Press, is about like saying that a pony is not a large horse and so I don't like ponies. This work is exactly what its title says that it is: a textbook for teaching and learning Greek in schools and colleges. As a textbook for the teaching of elementary Greek, especially considering the era in which this work was written and the time of its publication, this is a very instructive volume. Smyth's great Greek Grammar, which was originally published in 1920 as A Greek Grammar for Colleges was later renamed simply Greek Grammar, in part to distinguish it both from this elementary textbook and (I think) from the earlier version of the major work of 1920 that was subsequently revised by Gordon M. Messing in 1956. Smyth's Greek Grammar is a significant work for the advanced study of ancient Greek, whereas Smyth's A Greek Grammar for Schools and Colleges (fortunately brought back into print by this reprint edition) is, well, a Greek grammar for schools and colleges.

Be aware that this is NOT the book commonly known as Smyth's "Greek Grammar." Rather, it is a considerably shorter and inferior version that Smyth produced many years earlier. When a commentary on a Greek text refers to Smyth by the numbers attached to its various items, it will be citing the 1920 edition (still published, in Gordon Messing's revision, by Harvard University Press and available through ), not the numbers in this edition. That in itself renders this edition virtually useless. Nabu Press is perpetrating the very same fraud that Benediction Press has been practicing for years. See the comments on that edition by Kirk Ormand, myself, and several others. True, the Nabu and Benediction editions seem to offer a considerably savings, but they are NOT offering the product printed by Harvard University Press. It is also worth noting that their products are shoddily produced and not designed for sustained use.
